Plays Monk: All Is Know

Tony Kofi Quartet

Tony Kofi Quartet "Plays Monk" was the first album released on Malcolm Mills’ Specific Jazz label. It was the culmination of five years' study by Tony and the musicians associated with his Monk Liberation Front project and heralded the arrival of this great talent as a bandleader.

Kofi was joined by a real A-Team rhythm section (Jonathan Gee, Piano; Winston Clifford, drums; Ben Hazelton, bass and Orphy Robinson, vibes).

The musicians take the familiar, and not-so-familiar, themes of Thelonious Monk, and give them a true contemporary feel, while never losing sight of the tradition they represent. The album justifiably won the BBC Jazz Awards “Album of the Year” when it was released in 2005.
