The Fabulous Thunderbirds is a band that has seen many changes of personnel over the years since its formation in Austin, Texas in the 1970s.  This anthology focusses on all the studio recordings that were made for album releases during the period when the band was fronted by the formidable combination of Kim Wilson and Jimmie Vaughan that resulted in their “million-seller” status.  It is surely the ultimate collection that provides irrefutable evidence of the band’s peerless role in the preservation and transition of the blues at that time.

It begins by featuring thirteen unreleased cuts produced by Doc Pomus and Joel Dorn from sessions the band did in 1978 for a potential album that never saw daylight until now.  Running at over five hours of music on four CDs, the compilation follows their career through all the subsequent releases on Takoma Records, Chrysalis and Epic until Jimmie left the band to pursue his solo career in 1990, - a total of eight albums: The Doc Pomus Sessions 1978; The Fabulous Thunderbirds (Girls Go Wild); What’s The Word?; Butt Rockin’; T-Bird Rhythm; Tuff Enuff; Hot Number; Powerful Stuff.

The accompanying book is annotated by Bill Bentley who witnessed the band’s emergence and rise to fame.  There are also written contributions from drummers Mike Buck and Fran Christina, producer Denny Bruce plus extracts from interviews with Jimmie Vaughan and Kim Wilson.  It is crammed full of photos and images which, combined with these reminiscences, brings to life the story of this band in what is widely recognized as their heyday.

The box set will not be available as a digital compilation but 12” (blue) vinyl releases of all the individual records are planned for 2026.
